10 Craziest Movie Directors

8. Abel Ferrara

abel ferrera Abel Ferrara is an intense figure. If you Youtube him, you'll be greeted by a hulking man that growls machismo and has a somewhat sinister aura that surrounds him. He shot to fame through Driller Killer, a movie he wrote, directed and starred in. Driller Killer entered the cinema Hall of Infamy when it was one of the big films in the 'video nasties' scandal of the 80's - which, in other words, means it was banned and censored for its graphically grotesque content. Ferrara has since distanced himself from the picture as it is somewhat of a black mark on a filmography that features such greats as Bad Lieutenant, The Addiction, The Funeral and King of New York, though I would argue that the film isn't without significant merit. His films are often psychologically exhausting, and only a man that is familiar with dark places could come up with Bad Lieutenant. The craziest moment of Ferrara's career is without a doubt his venture into porn in a film that starred his then-girlfriend. It's a bizarre event for such a talented director, but it also adds to his legend. Ferrara's crazy days in porn are best summed up in his own immortal words: "It's bad enough paying a guy $200 to f**k your girlfriend, then he can't get it up."
