There is only one Lord of the Rings, and he does not share power. These were the seemingly wise words given by Gandalf when Saruman abandoned reason for madness, but what if the grey wizard was wrong? What if that was exactly what Sauron was planning to do?

Decades before the events of the movie trilogy, there was a Dark Lord that plagued Middle-earth before Sauron. The big bad of the First Age was Morgoth, incredibly powerful, incredibly evil, and of whom Sauron was originally a follower. He was ultimately defeated and banished to the Void, but it was prophesied that he would one day return.

He is completely absent from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but as a ruler what if he was never out of his protégé's mind? There is a theory that Sauron's entire plan was put in place to enslave the world of Men, Elves, Dwarves, and Hobbits, then somehow barter for Morgoth's freedom.

While it may be difficult to believe based on what is known of Sauron, his motivation of pure power is certainly open to potentially having deeper layers. What would he have done once he had this power? There is no true exploration into the mind of Sauron, but as he was a loyal follower once before, who is to say that ever stopped?
