Before Snoke was seen taking a bath in a cloning vat in The Rise of Skywalker, there were tons of theories spread across the Internet attempting to identify who he was and where he came from. After all, it's barely hinted at in the first two movies, so theories spread like wildfire.

While some speculated that he was a clone, others believed him to be someone only referenced in the Prequel Trilogy by Emperor Palpatine. He spoke of Darth Plagueis the Wise — a Sith Lord who mastered death itself.

His mentioning of this was all part of the plan to turn Anakin to the dark side, but there was some truth in his words. He repeated them in The Rise of Skywalker, and his plan in that movie evolved into taking over the body of Rey instead of rebuilding his broken and feeble cloned body.

The theory twists Palpatine's words, suggesting the spirit of Darth Plagueis possessed Snoke. He may have died years before, but he passed his consciousness into another being and take control. The theory is a bit out there, seeing as Pelagius wouldn't willingly become Sidious' puppet, but some fans believed it.
