9. Deep Red

Dario Argento’s Deep Red is an Italian film which mixes the horror and mystery genres. The plot follows a psychic medium and a jazz pianist on the hunt for a prolific and brutal serial killer.

The most popular poster for the movie features the outline of a man falling down a hole, the spirals coloured in different shades that compliment red. However, the posters geared more towards the horror market focus on a scene in the film where a doll is depicted hanged by a rope. The one which makes this list has the added horror of an undead corpse shambling in the background.

The doll itself is the usual red-cheeked variety: one that wouldn’t raise concern if you saw a child playing with it. This provides added creepiness in seeing it lynched on a rope and grasping a bloody cleaver. This image alone is unnerving, however, there is a secondary creepy image.

A corpse with decaying green flesh, covered with strips of white rags, lingers in the background. Caught in a spotlight, its dead head lolls as does its mouth, leaving you torn between which aspect of the poster is creepier.
