10 Criminally Overrated Horror Movies

5. Paranormal Activity (2007)

This film wants to provoke fear in the viewer - extreme fear - and it is about successful as a wet fart at doing so. I have actually sat through all of the Paranormal Activity franchise and I have yet to receive a scare from anyone of them. I keep thinking "Maybe this one will hit the spot" but to tell you the truth, I cannot even remember a single instance of any of the franchise trying to elicit fear in the viewer, let alone succeeding. Just because a film is made by the protagonists using the camera themselves - a la Cannibal Holocaust or Blair Witch Project - does not automatically increase the fear factor or make it an interesting film. In fact, it can be quite boring with long periods of inactivity that mistake dull footage with growing thrills. The marketing of this movie really hyped it to death so it was an inevitable letdown when people realised they were watching a giant turd. If you compare this film with other supernatural films like Ringu, Ju On, Dark Water - it comes across as a hammy and laughable affair. The director must be sniggering himself silly that chumps like me are actually watching this crud. The boyfriend is an annoying d**khead. So his girlfriend has been followed by a ghost since she was eight years old? Why has nobody looked into this or tried to help her before? And why, after all of these years does the ghost grow malevolent to a murderous degree? There are plot holes galore as you can see, as well as tedium... Looooong stretches of tedium. And bad acting, bad script, amateurish directing, lame attempts to scare the viewers which wouldn't hoodwink my seven month old nephew. I can positively state to you that if you haven't watched any of the Paranormal Activity franchise not to watch it. 90 minutes of your life that you will never get back again.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
