Saw had a lot of potential greatness. It had an original concept - two guys awake tied up in a s**tty bathroom with tools at their disposal to break free and try to kill each other first to survive. The film does a lot of really boring flashbacks as to why the two guys are placed in this predicament by Jigsaw - the criminal mastermind behind all of this trite nonsense. How on earth could anyone lie face down in a pool of blood for ten hours - showing nary a twitch or a sneeze - and jump up so easily when it is their time to make a move? I just don't buy it. Gore is not a substitute for good writing, good acting and a well made film (except in an H G Lewis movie) and I have seen and own many of the Saw franchise movies (I got them at a car boot sale for a pound each). I do not like Saw or its sequels, and I am a woman who spends her free time looking at very extreme cinematic material. Saw is just plain boring, you know that graphic gore is coming, but it doesn't startle you when it arrives. There is just so much gore and sadism that the films become mind numbing. Added to this is their insanely stupid story lines and terrible acting and you have 'torture porn' at its worst. Nobody is interested in the story lines and just watch for what inventive and gruesome event is going to happen next. Saw panders to the lowest common denominator.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
