6. The Reef

Jennifer Lawrence Winter's Bone
Atlas Entertainment

A shoestring budget, a bunch of non actors and a plot loosely based around real events usually gives off a straight to on demand scent. But in the hands of still little-known director Andrew Traucki, The Reef is a creature feature with far more bite than you'd expect.

While the plot is a bit of a doozy - yacht overturns and the hapless crew have to decide whether to make a swim for it or wait to be saved - it's Traucki's smart idea of splicing staged shots with collected footage of sharks that really ramps up the tension of this film.

There's also a really taut dramatic angle to get your teeth into as well, all leading up to a genuinely surprising finale. Flippers down, this is the best shark movie since Jaws.
