Hollywood films about Hollywood life are usually front row and centre when it comes to popularity and/or critical acclaim, but this wasn’t the case with Sofia Coppola’s silent yet skilful character study.
Set at the legendary Chateau Marmont, a place that is renowned for being a haunt for industry types and a place Coppola herself holds fond memories of, the plot and pace takes the director back to what made her celebrated with the likes of The Virgin Suicides and Lost In Translation.
Yes, it's another languid coming together of persons but this time around it is Stephen Dorff’s up and coming star in the Bill Murray mould, who has his lounging sessions interrupted by the arrival of his daughter (Elle Fanning). What transpires is a talky, sensitive picture that unfolds at a poolside pace but sees Dorff returning to form quite sublimely and Fanning more than holding her own. Sun-tinted and sumptuously sentimental.
