10 Critically Acclaimed Films That Struggled At The Box Office

6. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World (2010)

Grindhouse Quentin Tarantino
Universal Pictures

The fact that Scott Pilgrim vs The World is even mentioned in a list of films that failed to make a profit is a travesty in and of itself. An Edgar Wright directed retelling of Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel, it manages to incorporate a truly phenomenal soundtrack, stunning visuals and a unique video-game aesthetic into one package that just works.

The story follows Scott - an aspiring musician and slacker - as he pursues a romance with a girl called Ramona. He splits up with his current girlfriend, and once the two get together, he realises that to be with Ramona he must defeat her seven evil exes. In the background, his band are competing in a Battle of the Bands competition, and several of the fights occur during performances.

With comic-book visuals, Easter Eggs galore and ground breaking combinations of visual and practical effects, the film won nineteen separate awards over the years as well as making it into a truly spectacular number of top ten lists. It fell around $40 million short of recouping its $85 million budget, despite its 85% approval rating.

As with some others on this list, home media will hopefully have bridged this gap a bit.
