10 Darkest Moments In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

4. The Crash - Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America: The First Avenger had a lot to get through.

It had to give us plenty of time with pre-muscles Steve Rogers, show his transformation into Captain America and his various escapades, detail his conflict with Red Skull, and, of course, transition him into the modern day for his eventual team-up with The Avengers.

It pulled all this off relatively well, and even managed to fit in a convincing love story between Steve and Peggy Carter, an officer working with Tommy Lee Jones' Chester Philips.

This romance came to a distressing climax at the end of the movie, with the pair of lovers having one final conversation over an intercom right before Steve crashes the enormous aircraft he's commandeered straight into the ice below.

This instantly evoked a similar scene from the opening of J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek revival, and one thing that both have in common is that they will, without a shadow of a doubt, bring a tear to your eye.

Imagine talking to a loved one - knowing this will be your final time - but you can't hug them, or touch them, then all of a sudden, you hear the moment that they die, as the conversation, and their life, comes to an end?

The emotional punch this moment packed was as hard, sudden and abrupt as Steve's crash, and just for a moment - before you remembered the next movie - you felt that Captain America was dead, buried and gone.
