10 DC Comics Movies That Almost Happened
2. Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman
It took a criminal amount of time for the powers that be to hand Wonder Woman a cinematic debut. Even if it had come more than 10 years earlier as originally planned, that still would have been considered long overdue.
Diana Prince came close to her first solo outing in the mid-2000s, years before Hollywood's comic book boom, when Joss Whedon was tasked with writing and directing a film about the Amazon warrior.
Whedon's script took place against a modern backdrop and had Diana travelling from Themyscira to Gateway City with Steve Trevor in tow as the pair journeyed to help refugees, encountering numerous foes along the way.
Creative differences eventually forced the Avengers director off the project, and when his script was leaked online years later, the reception was overwhelmingly negative. But it's important to point out that the world would have had its first female-led superhero movie a decade earlier had this film been made.
Back in the mid-2000s, when the comic genre wasn't bogged down by countless origin stories, Whedon's Wonder Woman could have held its own with a few script rewrites.
