10 DC Comics Movies That Almost Happened

3. Justice League: Mortal

Long before cinematic universes were the done thing in the superhero space, Warner Bros attempted to do the unheard of an dive head-first into a Justice League movie.

Mad Max director George Miller was hired to helm the project and he made the bold decision of hiring little-known actors to play some of history's most iconic heroes, in the hope they would grow into the roles over the course of a planned trilogy.

Armie Hammer would have played Batman, Australian model Megan Gale was Wonder Woman and D.J. Cotrona was cast as Superman. The team roster also included The Flash, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern and Aquaman, so that's the Zack Snyder version outgunned.

Miller was inspired by the Justice League of American storyline Tower of Babel and the Superman: Sacrifice arc, planning to loosely adapt them with Talia Al Ghul and Maxwell Lord as the movie's villains.

The decision to hire relative unknowns in the lead roles was met with fan vitriol online, but opponents of Mortal needn't have worried since the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike derailed the project shortly after the cast was leaked.

Essential revisions to the screenplay could not be made due to the Hollywood unrest and a series of other setbacks left the project in development hell. By this time, Marvel was already getting its cinematic universe off the ground one film at a time, inspiring Warner to follow suit with a series of connected DC solo movies.
