9. The Shower Scene
This may seem like it belongs under the deadly sin of lust, but it's its own sin for a reason. It doesn't matter what movie you're watching, the chances of you seeing a shower scene today is staggering. Why is this a sin? It's really one of those cliches in horror films that are crossing over to just about every genre. Still doesn't answer your question? It's not bad that most films feature a shower scene if it moves along the story or expresses a character struggle or flaw that adds to the theme of the film, but most films don't. The shower scene today is used either for sensuality, cheap scares, or more reasonably, for vulnerability. The problem comes when there is no other reason for the shower scene except for the obvious reasons. Jessica Alba's shower scene in The Eye was pretty much for sensuality, so was her bathtub scene in Good Luck Chuck. Let's just say Alba has been in her fair share of shower scenes and the reasons are very obvious. Contrast those scenes with Kevin Spacey's in American Beauty, in which his character masturbates in the shower pathetically as part of his daily routine. It shows the character's sad life and acts as precursor to his sexual fantasies and desires. Even Tony Montana sitting in his huge bathtub shows the lavishness and wealth that he has acquired through his drug trade. It's not the shower scene itself that is a sin, but the way that it tempts films to use it as a filler scene rather than utilizing it to its full potential. It's become an easy way out and is more of a gateway to other deadly sins on the list.
