10 Deadly Sins Committed By Most Films

7. Envy

hunger-games-600x300 We're in deep territory now - the deadlies - so to start off this deadly sin we begin with a question. How many movies have been made as a result of some other film's success? It's a simple question with a simple answer. A lot. Movie studios have made many films in reaction to the success of others including The Hunger Games, Twilight, The Avengers, and the forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, and the list continues with smaller scale films. Katherine Heigl seems to be an answer to Kate Hudson's and Cameron Diaz's success in the romantic comedy genre. DC's plan to make a Justice League movie is a shot right back at The Avenger's monster success. But another question arises. Is this really a sin most films commit? Envy has driven many films and have been the cause of mergers and buyouts. You think producers are making The Hunger Games because the children demanded it? Yes and no, but it's mostly because Twilight earned a buttload of cash and they wanted to get on that gravy train. That's why Lionsgate, the distributor for The Hunger Games, bought out Summit, distributor of the Twilight series, in 2012. Envy is the reason why Harry Potter brought about every single children/teen book adaptation on earth. Envy is why we get dozens of the same movies every year because studios act accordingly to what the public spends money on. While the films themselves aren't envious, the guilt of envy lingers of most of these films because most of them will probably suck, vampire pun not intended. And since we're getting so much of the same thing, this leads to our next sin...

I'm a thinker/fantasizer who writes down his thoughts and fantasies hoping it makes sense to everyone else. Also I'm an aspiring screenwriter, but if I can work in film at all, I'd be happy. One day you may hear the name Ryan Kim and associate it with "Academy Award winning writer" or with "where's that guy with my coffee." If the latter comes true, please let it be Paul Thomas Anderson's coffee I'm getting.
