7. Marebito (2004)
Directed by Takashi Shimizu, Marebito deals with the emotion of fear. A man named Masouka descends into the underworld of a Japanese city to find it full of freaks and mutants. He discovers a naked girl who doesn't speak, sleep, eat or drink tied to a wall and takes her home with him. He dubs the girl F. Upon cutting his finger he finds out that F likes the taste of blood. Masouka stops treating her as a woman and now treats her as a pet, feeding her animal carcasses. He is menaced by a woman in a yellow coat who accuses him of keeping her daughter captive. He kills this woman and his life disintegrates around him, leading up to him offering himself as food to F. F and Masouka descend into the underworld hand in hand where the source of their fear is revealed. Only wanting to experience fear at its most extreme, Masouka's journey in Marebito is disturbing and frightening. It is a riddle that is very tricky to unravel. Considering the fact that Shimizu only made the film in 8 days, the movie is amazing in what it achieves. It is very Lovecraftian and surreal but ultimately a psycho-horror. The revelation of Masouki's fear is disturbing and unpleasant and the whole film has a creepy, morbid atmosphere. Not everybody will be able to take this film, which probably resulted in its obscurity in the first place.
