Imagine going into a Batman movie as a villain and having to follow the performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker. This was one of the most compelling on-screen portrayals in the entire comic book movie genre, though Tom Hardy still gave a damn good outing as Bane.

The antagonist in the threequel was not without his flaws and criticisms; one of the main ones being that voice. We may all be used to it now, and there isn't a Batman fan alive who hasn't practiced their own Bane impression, but at the time it was almost impossible to understand.

There was one flashback scene that teased what happened to Bane. The brute fought off the prisoners in the Pit while Talia made her escape and he was overwhelmed. As unpleasant as this would have been for Bane, would it really have forced him into wearing such facial gear for the rest of his life?

There was reportedly a scene that was ultimately cut from the movie that went into more detail about the reason, not only for the mask, but also for the waist belt and braces. This would have given that little bit more development to Bane, but still wouldn't have stopped him from being sidelined last minute for the awful Talia al Ghul.
