The original cut of Star Wars (later retitled Episode IV - A New Hope), edited by John Jympson, was a mess. It was too long, badly paced, and flowed about as smoothly as piano falling down a flight of stairs.

George Lucas fired Jympson and replaced him with a new team of editors, including his then-wife Marcia. The end result was the version of the movie beloved by so many people today, but this came at the cost of tonnes of unused footage.

One such section took place on Tatooine towards the beginning of the story, when Luke Skywalker was still but a humble farm hand. He is dispatched by his uncle to Tosche Station to fetch some power converters, where he runs into an old friend of his; Biggs Darklighter.

Biggs, who made it to the final cut but in a severely reduced role, explains to Luke that he's joining up with the Rebels, and the two even discuss the importance of a mystical power known as the Force.

Considering Biggs dies in the Death Star bombing run later in the movie, maybe this scene could have been left in to make that moment even more poignant.
