A giant gelatinous blob? No match for Steve McQueen, even in his screen debut. While it is eventually defeated by a gang of groovy teenagers wielding fire extinguishers and parachuted into the Antarctic, it still racks up a great deal of damage, sucking in an aging mechanic and consuming half the small town where McQueen and his friends live. The film was originally called The Molten Meteor before becoming The Glob. Fortunately for all, the second title was the name of a popular children's book at the time, and the writers and producers finally settled on the simple, effective and massively memorable title: The Blob. By the end of the movie, the titular Blob has consumed the viewers of a movie theatre, set fire to a diner and also killed that poor old mechanic. For a small town monster, it still loves to cause chaos. And it has became enough of a cache in pop culture that it returns in a 1988 remake, where it is defeated in a very similar fashion to the original movie. Except this time, a still-living fragment of the creature winds up in the hands of a crazed doomsday preacher right as the movie's final credits begin to roll...
