10 Director Trademarks That You Can't Unsee

9. James Cameron: Blue Overlay

Tarantino Foot Fetish

James Cameron loves him some blue. He's traveled to the depths of the deep blue ocean. He's crafted an entire multi-million dollar sci-fi saga centered around aliens who have blue skin. Most importantly of all, he wants practically every frame of every film he's ever made to be blue.

Though his first major film, Terminator, is notably missing this excessively blue color palette, he has certainly made up for it in the years since. Beginning with 1986's Aliens, Cameron began inserting the color blue into all of his work. Whereas the first Alien film was a more starkly lit horror film, Aliens is a blockbuster awash in strong blue lighting.

Ever since, every film Cameron has made has had a blue overlayed applied over it. The Abyss, Terminator 2, Titanic, Avatar, you name the film and you can see the various shades of blue that Cameron insists on having throughout his films.

Perhaps this does all have something to do with his noted infatuation with the sea, maybe he just really loves the color of his eyes. Nobody knows other than James Cameron himself. But considering that his next film, Avatar 2, is set to feature a race of blue aliens going underwater with blue overlays laid over it, you can expect a whole lot of trademark Cameron blue to be coming soon to a theater near you.
