10 Director Trademarks That You Can't Unsee
6. Ridley Scott: Musings On God
Ridley Scott is an exceedingly talented and varied director. When looking at his filmography, it becomes apparent that his work is certainly not as concentrated as some of his pears. A Speilberg film is a Speilberg film. A Scorsese film is a Scorsese film. Just this past year alone, Ridley Scott made both Alien Covenant and All The Money In The World.
All of this to say, Scott is clearly a director with a wide range of interests. One minute he could be tackling a sci-fi horror film, the next an intimate Oscar-worthy drama. Yet strangely enough, even though Scott generally doesn't receive a writing credit on his films, he continues to find a thematic throughline.
Regardless of what genre Scott seems to be working in, his films will more often than not feature a character who serves as a voice of religious proportions. Inevitably, some character, at some point in time, will deliver a monologue about Heaven, Hell, and the God who watches over us.
Think the monologues delivered by the likes of Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner or Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator but something even more interesting has been happening to this trademark as Scott ages.
As Scott has grown older, his interest in this subject has notably spiked. Whether it be his cinematic adaptation of the Moses story, Exodus, or the way in which he has turned the Alien prequels into a meditation on creations and their creators, Scott's films seem to contain more religious context each year.
