10 Director's Cuts We'd Rather See Than Snyder's Justice League
3. Event Horizon
For horror junkies, it's Hellraiser in space. For many critics, it's an appalling mishmash of better movies recycled to lesser effect through the lens of a hack video game movie director. For others, it's a fun space horror ride that approximates being good but never quite attains it.
It's telling that Paul W.S. Anderson's most original commercial property since his debut Shopping is also his most derivative, parroting the look of every space thriller since Alien to an almost litigious extent. It's not without its pleasures, but they come with guilt attached as Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne spout out science jargon to make their space hell credible. And the film has a notable cult following, largely due to the traction it gained upon video release.
And that cult is as ravenous as the crew of the Event Horizon, going mad for the rumoured unreleased torture porn that was cut from the theatrical release due to poor test screenings. The controversial footage can be found heavily edited in both the theatrical and the supposed "director's cut" on DVD. It's the infamous "blood orgy" sequence that the crew finds on a ghost ship. While some of the footage's gory content has been restored, much of it oddly turned up in a salt mine in Transylvania so badly damaged, it was mostly unusable.
There's still hope that another copy of the footage will be found one day, but ultimately, it's just additional violence in an already gruesome film.
