Well, why not eh? JJ Abrams was often criticised for not understanding the Star Trek franchise, and for trying to make the less-action-packed, more utopian and character-driven world of Gene Roddenberry more akin to the grubby, pulpy thrills of George Lucas's. Turns out that those nay-sayers may have been at least half-right, since the Star Trek films appear to have been a training ground for Abrams eventually graduating to directing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. So maybe it'd be pertinent for the next Star Wars director to try out Star Trek as well? Sure, it basically makes Star Trek into the Arsenal of big-budget sci-fi blockbusters, but it's also good news for the fans. Rian Johnson has been chosen to direct the second of the rebooted Star Wars films, supposedly off the back of his unique, complex (and slightly nonsensical) time travel crime drama Looper. Johnson shows a natural flair for character, dialogue, humour and plot twists that would certainly fit with the Star Trek universe Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci built. He's yet to do a really big budget film, though, so it'd be interesting to get a glimpse of what blockbuster Johnson looks like before Star Wars: Episode VIII. And maybe Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be in it.
