9. Uwe Boll
Uwe Boll is distinguished on this list as being the only one who isn't a critically acclaimed director (despite holding a pHD), but rather the opposite. His films, usually dire video game adaptations, are critically panned without remit, and the only reason he's a filmmaker in the first place is because he exploits a German tax loophole which allows the film's losses to be written off by the government. Even though that loophole has closed, Boll is still somehow churning out the duds, and has earned something of a cult reputation as a modern day Ed Wood. What makes him crazy is that he just doesn't give a s**t; he has infamously proclaimed himself "the only true genius in the business". His famous video rants against Michael Bay (who he dubbed a "f***ing retard") prove that he's a singular director standing very much outside the Hollywood system, even if the films he makes as a result are nothing short of terrible. The extent of his eccentricity is perhaps evident from the fact that he challenged several of his most prominent critics to boxing matches, but neglected to reveal that he was an amateur boxer in his youth. A film was made about the fights called Raging Boll. Go figure.
