One of the most difficult sources to adapt into movies has consistently been video games. What works well in terms of action and adventure in an arcade or at home on a console doesn't often lend to a medium all about storytelling.

Despite this, many filmmakers have given it their best to try and bring a video game franchise to the world of motion pictures, and the results are decidedly mixed. Most movies fail to earn any real money at the box office, and they tend to be forgettable.

The ones people remember are those that were so bad, they should never have been made in the first place. The movie that is almost always at the top of that list is Rocky Morton's 1993 film, Super Mario Bros. The movie is widely considered to be absolute trash, and it's overtly ridiculous for the various characters, insane situations, and complete divergence from the source.

Rocky Morton knew his movie wasn't any good, and he's spoken about it over the years. Filming wasn't easy, and Morton came onto the project after it was already in development, which made it hard for him to make any changes. He described the movie in an interview with SciFiNow, where he said, “It’s a messy film. It’s a big mess.”
