10 Directors Who Survived Huge Movie Failures

2. Phil Lord & Chris Miller (Solo)

Even though they aren't listed as the directors of Solo, Phil Lord & Chris Miller helmed a huge portion of the movie before it was re-shot in the wake of their June 2017 firing, and they opted to take an executive producer credit for their involvement.

The directing duo was midway through production when it was announced that they had been fired by Lucasfilm, an absolute bombshell of a story considering the pair's excellent track record (21 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie), and the fact that, well, it was such an unheard of occurrence.

As was the case with Josh Trank, being involved in a major behind-the-scenes issue on such a high-profile blockbuster didn't exactly paint Lord and Miller in a good light, and follow-up reports stating that they had failed to comply with Lucasfilm's shooting requests didn't help their image.

Despite all this trouble, it didn't take too long before they were back in the game.

In 2019, they won an Oscar for producing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, quite possibly the best way to bounce back from a huge blockbuster disaster, and even though Solo bombed, the directors avoided most of that heat because their names weren't at the top of the credits.

Plus, with several movie projects already in the pipeline, it's clear that Solo didn't really have the disastrous effect on their careers that many assumed it would.
