10 Directors Who Tried To Be Alfred Hitchcock (And Failed Miserably)

9. James Nguyen - Birdemic

This one's pretty easy because it is literally The Birds; a low budget, intentionally bad remake of The Birds. Writer and director James Nguyen has even worked with Tippi Hedren before, on his equally bad and low budget Julie and Jack. As if to draw the explicit connection between his film and Hitch's he's used some footage of Ms. Hedren from Julie and Jack in Birdemic. The protagonist in Birdemic is also named Rod, a nod to The Birds leading man Rod Taylor. Through a first viewing of The Birds many people fail to notice the lack of any musical soundtrack. This is because once the terror begins there's the near constant shriek of birds, either nearby or far away. It's also due to Bernard Herrmann being credited as a sound consultant on the film. Indeed, he played a major role in developing the chilling and haunting bird calls. The problem with Birdemic is that, although it plays to its own awfulness, the irony only comes through as mindless self-indulgence. And as if he didn't get enough pleasure from just a single film Nguyen went and made Birdemic 2: The Resurrection due out some time in 2013. It's all over-the-top comedy more than anything, which considering how truly horrifying The Birds really is, seems less like homage and more like an affront.
