5. Spike Lee

Spike Lee is one of the world's most fiery filmmakers working, which goes to explain why his singlular-minded films are never going to register a string of consistent critical acclaim. After one hit (She Gotta Have It) and one flop (School Daze), his career leveled out and he delivered a run of five successful films, including Do The Right Thing, Jungle Fever and Malcolm X, the first and last of which are regarded as two of the director's best films. Since then, though, for every hit, he's had a flop; for every 25th Hour, there's a She Hate Me, and for every Bad 25, there's a Miracle At St. Anna. It seems often that Spike just throws whatever he wants at the screen, hoping it will stick, and while often this results in a powerfully angry tirade against injustice, it can also come across as incoherent rambling. Still, even in his failures, at least his films tend to always be interesting. Usually, anyway.
