3. Paul Thomas Anderson
Notable Films: Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, The Master, Magnolia Its directors like Anderson who make me believe that films can still be works of art. There Will Be Blood was an intense experience, and his follow-up The Master delivered the same top-notch storytelling that I have come to expect from him. Anderson isn't afraid of stretching run times in order to tell the story he wants to tell. With most of his films over 150 minutes, Anderson gives us a novelistic approach to films that usually television does better. He's careful when crafting character, progressing story, and giving us exactly what we need to know in order to enjoy what's in front of us.Even Punch-Drunk Love is better than most other romantic (comedy) movies out there and showed us that Adam Sandler has more ability than we think. Anderson is constantly bringing out the best in his actors, his trademark using long takes gives us a better sense of the actors ability to perform, almost as if they were actors on a stage rather than a screen. And of course, Ill never look at rollerblades the same again (Boogie Nights!)
