The Hype: Luc Besson hasn't made a balls-out action flick in years and years, and with a cast led by Scarlett Johansson and featuring Morgan Freeman in a supporting role, there's plenty to like. Sure, that whole "we only use 10% of our brain" premise is kinda goofy, but we can accept it. The Reality: Well, Johansson is an excellent choice for the lead, yet Besson's film simply fires off in too many silly directions for Lucy to ever be anything more than a daft if sporadically entertaining action flick. The movie presumes that a massive boost in intelligence will instantly make you a master gunfighter, allow you to manipulate the Earthly matter around you, and as for when she reaches 100% mental capacity? Well, we won't spoil it, but needless to say, it's at this point that the movie devolves into a near-pretentious farce when a kick-a** action flick would merely have sufficed. Sadly, Johansson doesn't really get much to do beyond look sexy, because her character becomes an increasingly hollow shell as the movie progresses, Freeman basically just explains the plot, and the villain, played by Oldboy's Choi Min-sik, is lamely forgettable.
