10 Disappointing Movies That Ruined Summer 2013

1. Elysium

ElysiumDid It Succeed?: It won last week's American box office, and has so far grossed $44.1 million, ensuring that it will make a profit within the next few weeks. Critically, it sits at 66% on Rotten Tomatoes. Why It's Disappointing: After the brilliant audacity and fierce originality of District 9, the expectations for Neil Blokamp's sci-fi follow-up were unquestionably high. With a great cast including Matt Damon as the lead and Jodie Foster in a meaty supporting role, how could it possibly go wrong? The consensus on Elysium is that it's a perfectly efficient action film, though as a sci-fi allegory, it is too heavy-handed and obnoxiously obvious compared to the clever nuance of District 9. Furthermore, Jodie Foster's accent-switching performance was widely-panned - with some even suggesting that she may be nominated for a Razzie next year - and what was hyped up as potentially the biggest and most exciting film of the summer has turned out to basically be just satisfactory. What do you think of the summer's movies so far? Are there any disappointments we missed? Let us know in the comments below.
