10 Disturbing Movie Moments You Never Noticed

1. A Voice Whispers "Doubter" - The Polar Express

Equilibrium Christian Bale
Warner Bros.

The creepiness of Robert Zemeckis' polarising holiday film The Polar Express isn't limited purely to its uncanny valley visual effects, but also this sly sliver of sound design in the third act.

As the Hero Boy picks up one of a reindeer's fallen bells, he can't hear it ring, and only after finding it within himself to believe does he indeed hear the ring. But put on a good pair of headphones or crank your sound system up and you can hear an eerie sound when the boy first holds the bell to his ear.

An echoy voice can be heard tauntingly calling him a "doubter," calling back to when the ghostly hobo called him the very same thing earlier in the movie.

It's easily missed if you're watching the film on tinny in-built TV speakers, but if you've got a solid home cinema setup or a decent pair of listening cans, it comes as quite the unnerving surprise. This is, like, the polar opposite of ASMR.
