10 Disturbing Movie Moments You Never Noticed
5. Nana Barks "Hook" - Hook
Steven Spielberg's Peter Pan romp Hook may be fun for all the family - in spite of being one of Spielberg's most polarising films - but there's one sublimely unsettling moment your ears have most certainly never caught.
Mid-way through the film, Wendy's (Maggie Smith) old pal Tootles (Arthur Malet) is suddenly woken up by the barking of trusty dog Nana, who is warning Tootles that the villainous Hook (Dustin Hoffman) is on the approach.
However, if you listen really closely to the barking, it very gradually morphs into what sounds like a human voice shouting "Hook!" for the last few barks. As the shouts are rather ingeniously mixed into the sound of Nana barking, it's tough to spot, yet the "k" in Hook can definitely be heard penetrating through the barks.
With left-field sound design like this, it's genuinely surprising that Hook's five Oscar nominations didn't include one for Sound Mixing.
Then again, it's a freaky enough trick that Oscar voters might've just repressed the memory of it en masse - if they even noticed at all.
