10 Doomed Movie Characters Saved By Reshoots
8. Alex Browning - Final Destination
Before it went on to become a surprise box office smash, supernatural horror film Final Destination was significantly tinkered-with during post-production following some less-than-stellar test screenings.
One of the test crowd's major sticking points was the original ending, which saw protagonist Alex (Devon Sawa) die one of two ways.
Some audiences were shown him being fatally electrocuted while sacrificing himself to save Clear (Ali Larter), while others saw an ending where he was decapitated by a helicopter rotor.
All the test audiences liked Alex and didn't much care for him dying at the end after fighting so hard to survive, and so six months after principal photography wrapped, and just two months before it was set to release, reshoots were conducted to change Alex's fate.
Instead, a new ending was filmed set in Paris, where Alex survives and it's instead his friend Carter (Kerr Smith) who dies, being comically crushed to death by a gigantic sign as the film cuts to black.
It was certainly a smart change, giving audiences a more amusing "gotcha!" ending while keeping Alex alive for potential sequels.
Sadly, though, Sawa didn't end up returning for Final Destination 2, with reports varying on precisely why, causing Alex to get a lousy off-screen death where a news report states that he was killed by a falling brick.
