Star Wars: Rogue One was definitely a risky move for Disney, as it was the first standalone feature film in the franchise. It fills a hole in the series' canon, and it was positively received by most fans, so the risk paid off.

Reshoots proved necessary as filming progressed, so Disney brought in writer/director Tony Gilroy to fix some issues. That earned him a $5 million paycheck and a screenplay credit. He shot & reshot several scenes, which included the Vader-heavy ending.

The movie concludes mere moments before A New Hope begins. That film opens with the Tantive IV being fired upon by a Star Destroyer. Vader pops in for a quick visit, and he doesn't find the plans. Rogue One answers the question of how he knew the plans were aboard the ship.

He knows because he chased the Rebel spies, nearly making it on board the vessel before it could escape. The scene where Vader does that was made as a sort of love letter to fans because it finally showed Vader's real capabilities as a Dark Lord of the Sith, and it was epic!

As it happens, that wasn't intended to be in the movie. Rogue One was originally meant to end after the plans were safely beamed to the ship. While editing, the scene with Vader was conceived, and some additional shots were ordered. It ended the movie perfectly, and Vader's is arguably the best scene in the Rogue One.
