10 Double Movie Features From Hell
2. The Messengers And Freedomland
Not all of these are just wacky combinations invented to make you suffer, a few we actually tracked down as pairings on once hawked on DVD. And somewhere along the way, Sony Pictures Releasing saw fit to put two films less than a year apart together as one. Beyond the close proximity of release, the distributor and maybe the notion that children are in danger at some point in both films, The Messengers and Freedomland have nothing in common.
The Messengers was a 2007 horror film directed by the Pang Brothers and starring Kristen Stewart about malevolent darkness haunting a sunflower farm in North Dakota. Freedomland is the one where Julianne Moore blamed it on a black guy.
There's even a bizarre thematic disconnect between the two films. The Messengers is an old-timey ghost story, with nothing really dynamic to add to the genre. Freedomland, on the other hand, is a timely, ripped-from-the-headlines story based on Susan Smith, who drowned her two children and tried to blame a fictional African American car thief.
We even studied both film's cast list carefully to check for overlap. Not one actor or extra appears in both. The only other aspect the films seem to share is that they're both not particularly good.
There are other, equally egregious pairings that were randomly thrown together and sold cheaply at your local CVS, but none quite so bizarre.
