10 Downright Ridiculous Excuses For Terrible Movies

3. The Room - It Was Supposed To Be Funny

The Excuse: After his film was panned, director and star Tommy Wiseau claimed retroactively that his film was a black comedy and we were all supposed to be laughing.
Viewed as a farce, there can certainly be some pleasure in watching Wiseau's film, because that's the only way to enjoy the technical and story-telling problems of the rank amateurish production. There are no sign-posts that Wiseau is poking fun at the medium or the conventions of cinema, and that instead he is just a very, very poor film-maker. Unfortunately for Wiseau, most of the cast poured scourn on his retroactive assertion that the film was actually meant to be a black comedy, derailing his attempt to remarket the dross as something intentional. So nice try buddy, but we're all laughing at you, and not with you as you dastardly planned all along.
