Granted, this version of Bane was by no means intended to be intelligent, but the fact he was so much of an intellectual contrast to his comic book counterpart made his level of dumbness stand out even more. In the Batman and Robin movie, the Bane character was originally a skinny serial killer serving life in prison called Antonio Diego (and therefore wasn't particularly bright to begin with) who was transformed into Bane by mad scientist Dr. Jason Woodrue using an experimental drug called Venom. After the process was complete, he woke up from it as a mindless, muscle-bound thug played by the late wrestler Jeep Swenson. The character didn't necessarily do many stupid things, but he was clearly nothing more than a pawn in Poison Ivy's plans who would take any order thrown at him - even if it was to his own detriment.
