10 Early Predictions For 2019's Best Picture Oscar Nominees

8. The Favourite

Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) isn't exactly a filmmaker whose demented body of work screams "Best Picture", but the trailer for his new period dramedy seems like a decidedly more mainstream offering from the director.

Though it'll no doubt still tout his trademark idiosyncrasies, an awards-friendly cast including Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman should make this a ferocious contender in a number of key categories, especially for its actresses, screenplay, Lanthimos' direction and, yes, Best Picture.

It remains to be seen just how toned-down the movie is compared to his darker prior works, but if it finds the right mood, it's easy to see the Academy falling head-over-heels for this.
