5. Father-Son Bonding - Happiness
Easily the darkest entry on this list, this unbearable scene from Happiness (skip to the end of the above video for the payoff) is signature Todd Solondz, as he pierces the protective bubble wrap of middle-class suburbia and exposes the ugly, beating heart within. It all gets horrifying once young Billy Maplewood (Rufus Read) discovers that his father, Bill (Dylan Baker), is a child molester, and goes about asking him the particulars of it. Bill is unexpectedly candid with Billy, causing Billy to take an equally unexpected line of questioning. Billy asks his father, "Would you f*** me?", and Bill tearfully replies, "No, I jerk off instead", causing Billy, distraught at being friend-zoned by his father, to break down into tears. The response of most audiences is usually either agape horror, or to use laughter as a defense mechanism against perhaps the most effed-up scene in movie history.
