10 Endings That Make Movies Impossible To Rewatch

5. Robbie Somehow Makes It To Boston - War Of The Worlds

War of the Worlds Tom Cruise
Paramount Pictures

In Steven Spielberg’s take on H.G. Wells’ War Of The Worlds Tom Cruise stars as estranged, working class father of two Ray struggling to protect his bratty children Robbie and Rachel when aliens attack Earth hell-bent on destroying humankind. Round about halfway through the film, the trio come across a battle between the aliens and the US military and Robbie apparently entranced by the firefight decides he simply must join the conflict (because nothing quite scares off invading aliens like a teenaged, angst-ridden emo boy). A huge explosion ensues and the audience assumes young Robbie is toast.

After Tom Cruise single-handedly saves the day and he and his remaining child travel to a devastated Boston in search of his ex-wife and in-laws who, alongside their beautiful townhouse, have miraculously survived the carnage. But that’s not the biggest miracle in War Of Tthe Worlds. Robbie, assumed MIA, has somehow managed to survive running directly into an alien skirmish and made it to Boston in time for the ending. A typically schmaltzy conclusion from Spielberg but one that doesn’t really realistically fit into an alien invasion movie.
