10 Epic Challenges Toy Story 4 Faces

2. How Many Good Third Sequels Are There?

Movie trilogies are such a big deal for one clear reason: making three great movies is hard, but making four is next to impossible. Just look at some of the more dubious fourth movies in major franchises: Lethal Weapon 4, Terminator Salvation, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Rocky IV, practically any horror series' fourth movie, and so on and so on. The majority of the fourth movies that actually worked are franchises adapted from books, as in the case of Harry Potter. These are exceptions, though: for the most part, fourth movies are a bad idea, and for Toy Story, as well-received as its three movies are, it goes double. Third sequels that keep focus on what made the original movies so great are enormously rare, and if Pixar somehow deliver an amazing TS4, then fair play to them. Given their track record with the franchise, the odds appear to be in their favour, though at the same time, those odds are diminished with each subsequent sequel, and number four is often the magic number where a franchise falls off a cliff.
