10 Epic Moments In Sergio Leone Films

8. The Bridge Explosion - The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Once Upon a Time in America Harmonica

The first of three The Good, The Bad and The Ugly scenes on this list is certainly one of the most explosive.

As the third instalment of the Dollars Trilogy, budget restraints were no longer as much of an issue for the ambitious Italian director, who decided that his tale of three men on the hunt for gold needed more dynamite.

On route to Sad Hill Cemetery where the gold is buried, Clint Eastwood (reprising his role as the Man with No Name), and Eli Wallach (starring as the Mexican bandit Tuco), are prevented from reaching their destination by an ongoing American Civil War battle. After speaking to a dejected Union captain about the significant loss of life that had been caused by the campaign, the unlikely duo decide to blow up the bridge.

The entire Civil War sequence of the film is impressive in its own right and a offered glimmer into what a Leone war film would have looked like. Considering the production standards of the time, the explosion is remarkably impressive for a film made in 1966. Eastwood himself was reportedly almost hit by shrapnel!

To add to the legendary status of the bridge explosion, this scene is notoriously a victim of one of the greatest mistakes in filmmaking history. After a misunderstanding between production staff and explosives team, the bridge was exploded without the camera rolling! This resulted in the entire bridge having to be rebuilt and the scene having to be shot again.
