3. Death Proof

Quentin Tarantino's followup to Kill Bill and one of his most divisive movies. Death Proof perfectly captures the look of the classic grindhouse era while also bringing a streak of self-awareness to the story. Tarantino has never been ashamed of some of the more lurid influences on his work and he goes all out with this film. The characters are almost laughably over the top even for a Tarantino movie but that helps the overall product. You don't expect anything less from ta director who is known for displaying images of gruesome violence offset with moments of humor and Death Proof delivers that in a way that sets it apart from any other Tarantino film. While it may not be his best movie it is an essential exploitation film and one of very few with a self aware tone.
