Movie Monster: Giant Lizard What better way to acquaint yourself with Godzilla than to take a look at the film that started it all? Without this film, none of the movies on this list would likely exist: it's that simple. With the birth of Godzilla, we also saw the birth of kaiju... giant monsters with one goal - to destroy everything. And while the radioactive lizard's first outing was nothing more than a guy in a suit, the film found a place in a fifties audience's imagination and has remained there ever since. This is because there is more to the Toho production than fire and brimstone. Godzilla is also a biting metaphor for the sheer destruction the atomic bomb brought to Japan. This is the reason Godzilla is radioactive - he is the biological equivalent of a nuclear weapon and an immensely popular one. Toho have commissioned 28 films featuring the 'King of the Monsters,' and he has battled everything and anyone, from Mothra to King Kong. His name is now synonymous with the monster movie genre, and his likeness has reappeared and reemerged time and time again since he first laid waste to cinemas in 1954.
