10 Essential Monster Movies You Need To See Before Godzilla

6. The Host (2006)

Movie Monster: Gwoemul (yeah, we're not sure either) By far the most surreal and 'out-there' film on the list, it's hard to know where to really don't know where to begin with this one. For starters, we're not really sure what Gwoemul (Korean for the 'host') is, only that it emerges from Seoul's Han River and that it's one of the most unique (although not the biggest) monsters on the list. The film itself is darkly comic in places, and like Godzilla, is a social commentary based in Asia. Whereas Godzilla focused on the horrors of nuclear war, The Host's creature takes a bit out of government occupation in Korea - something very real in the current climate. It may not be the most well-known of monster films, but The Host might be the best film of the genre since the turn of the century. With action, comedy and extremely effective jump-scares, this will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.

I love all things imaginative, from the page to the screen, and nurture a soft spot for Donald Sutherland and Daniel Bryan.
