Writer and star, Greta Gerwig, recently made headlines for being cast in the lead role of How I Met Your Dad. Before that, she was a darling of the mumblecore scene working with other mumblecore figures like Joe Swanberg and the Duplass Brothers, before moving on to higher end indie work, playing opposite of Ben Stiller in films such as Greenberg. Her best movie in which she helped write and star in is Frances Ha, which was directed by Noah Baumbach, no stranger to directing small, personal films. In the movie, Gerwig plays Frances, who is a 27-year-old professional dancer living in Brooklyn with her roommate Sophie (Mickey Sumner). Frances life is thrown into chaos when Sophie decides she is going to move in with her boyfriend. Frances Ha is Gerwigs best work and will always be a testament to her talent. It also helped that Noah Baumbach is really good at directing small stories like that, having directed The Squid and the Whale and Margot at the Wedding. Together they make a film that is very real and honest. It basically follows Frances around as she bemoans being broke, having little or no prospects. Frances Ha is amazing because it shows how little segments of anyones life can be interesting... if you pick the right segments.
