10 Essential "Retro" Genre Movies You Have To See

6. Planet Terror

Sometimes all you want from a horror movie is blood and guts splattering wildly across the screen, and if there's one thing that Robert Rodriquez has proved throughout his career it's that he knows how to deliver cinematic carnage. His contribution to the Grindhouse double feature, Planet Terror, might be less self-consciously referential than Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, but it captures the spirit of low-grade schlocky exploitation films perfectly. Zombie outbreaks, Bruce Willis on hilarious form as a crazy soldier and of course Rose McGowan kicking ass with an assault rifle for a leg makes Planet Terror as utterly ridiculous as anything produced by the likes of Troma. The spirit of grindhouse movies continues to live on in movies such as Machete, Hobo With A Shotgun and Drive Angry, although the culture of late night screenings in dingy movie theaters has all but disappeared.
