10 Essential Summer Blockbusters That Aren't Part Of A Franchise

6. Everest

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke will star in this story, based on real life events of the 1996 Mount Everest. Two expeditions failed to reach the summit, one led by Gyllenhaal's Scott Fischer and the other by Clarke's Rob Hall, leading to a then-record amount of people dying. The reason behind the failure was an extremely severe snow storm, and that combined with the mountain itself should provide scope for some fairly epic action scenes. There'll also be a chance to dig further into the characters psyche, given they'll no doubt be going through some mental as well as physical trauma - especially with Keira Knightley set to play Hall's pregnant wife, which should give the film an extra dimension. Disaster movies work best when they blend the huge action with the more personal human stories, and this one should get that mix right. What could be bigger than a film about Mount Everest?
