10 Even More Upcoming Movies That Are Already Doomed
5. The Naked Gun Reboot
Remakes are often met with scorn, even though they're not always a recipe for disaster. As Ocean's Eleven, The Fly, Scarface, The Departed, and The Thing proved, reimaginings can turn out better than the original.
With that said, the grumblings circling The Naked Gun reboot are warranted. The original Police Squad-adapted feature was lightning in a bottle thanks to Jerry Zucker's airtight script and David Zucker's sharp direction, though it was Leslie Nielsen's career-defining performance that brought everything together. There may have been many dry comedic performers since Nielsen, but few have ever been on a par with him.
Now, that's not suggesting it's impossible to make a solid Naked Gun reboot. In theory, Akiva Schaffer seems like the perfect person to helm this property, considering he's worked on zany projects such as The Lonely Island, I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, and Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers. Unfortunately, the problem lies with Nielsen's replacement, Liam Neeson.
The Northern Irish actor is a tremendous talent, but isn't exactly the first person that comes to mind after hearing the words "absurdist buffoonery". Neeson has explored deadpan humour in projects like Ted and Life's Too Short, but he often comes across as mildly amusing instead of gut-bustingly hilarious.
Simply put, Liam Neeson is completely miscast. Although the Taken star will hopefully do a decent job, it doesn't seem possible for him to measure up to Leslie Nielsen.
