10 Exact Moments Awesome Movie Directors Stopped Trying

4. The Nazi...Bratwurst - Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith has had one of the strangest and most unexpected careers of any filmmaker working today, venturing from his self-funded indie debut Clerks to a series of similarly-themed, low-budget studio films, to more star-studded comedy fare, followed by a sharp left-turn into horror fare, and most recently circling back to his roots.

Though Smith deserves some credit for trying to branch out with thrillers like Red State and Tusk, which despite their mistakes were at least interesting, it became clear he was out of compelling ideas by the time his 2016 effort Yoga Hosers hit screens.

A scattershot spin-off from Tusk, the film revolves around the "Colleens" introduced in that film - played by Lily-Rose Depp and Smith's own daughter Harley Quinn - but lacks much of a cohesive central vision, basically amounting to Smith firing every wacky idea he has at the screen willy-nilly.

This reaches its insufferable apex when Smith himself makes a cameo in the film as an army of "Bratzis," Nazi bratwurst which attack the Colleens.

From a writing, directing, and especially a visual effects perspective, it's no better-crafted than a student YouTube film, and a sheer embarrassment coming from an established filmmaker.

Given the film's critical and commercial failure, it's little surprise that Smith returned to the nostalgia well for his next feature, the entertaining-if-lazy Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
